Outro's Rec = New Album: The Young Knives

The Young Knives- Sick Octave
I've not pledged anything to a kickstarter project before, but some bands- you owe something. I've been to hundreds of gigs over the past 8 years seeing 95% of anyone I could have wished to, I've gained some sort of vague respect from and hung out with a lot of great bands and it all began that night with these guys (fresh from winning the road to v) and the rumble strips, who were on the same bill and to whom I wish I could have some sort of impact on their revival but it's all gone a bit quiet on that front. Young Knives however, we all can.
Kickstarter is a way of funding projects via pledges and getting something more back than you usually would when you support an artist. In addition to the music, you can get anything from a selection of rewards dependent on the amount you pledge, involvement in each step of the project and the knowledge you have actually made a difference to the band rather than paying a HMV staff member's hourly wage, you know- while that's still possible.
Voices of Animals and Men soundtracked the peak and decline of Summer 2006 (This. Is. The. End. Of. The. Summer) musically, lyrically, englishnessily the album was so good that potentially inaccessible tracks like tailors and half-timer which, if placed in another band's back catalogue may be lost to the annals of time, are requested fervently at their shows.
I guess there isn't too much point reviewing an album that came out 7 years ago but there is no new album to review as yet and that's because there won't be unless they reach their target before the 22nd May. Help a drummer and a couple of brothers out.
While a sickening amount of bands from the mid-zeroes have let life get in the way of their music, YK have taken the normal stuff in their stride and continued their relentless march through touring and music making. Over the past half a decade, they've lost a 'the', released two albums and added sheen to their sound which now they want to remove. Your reward is your choice, along with their upcoming album and EP (Oh Happiness) you can be in a music video, be on their guest list for 10 years and pretty much anything else in between. What's more you could get your e-hands on their formerly presumed mythological demo album, "Nolens Volens". Insane.

Sounds of 2013: Villagers- Earthly Pleasure

Villagers- Earthly Pleasure
While Villagers debut was sublime I didn't expect much from the follow up, not for any other reason than i've grown weary of anything new, this comes with the labouring of time.

2013: HAIM. by Outroversion

2013: HAIM.

by outroversion

In 2012 the world didn't end, it rained at christmas and all the best albums with a few pleasant exceptions were by already well travelled artists.
2013 means all the usual expectations of a new arctic monkey or amy winehouse, i'm usually fairly indifferent to hype but i dunno, i like these guys. Watch this video and try not to have your curiosity piqued. And yeah, they are good enough for me to bother writing about-

Tracks of 2012: Green Day- Nightlife by OUTROVERSION

Tracks of 2012: Green Day- Nightlife

Green Day- Night Life
Not a typical Green Day song by any means but one of the best in recent times and man, I loved 21st Century Breakdown it was a great album but this one is even better. It's definitely in the running for my album of the year and this track is a big reason. The guest vocals are from "Lady Cobra" from "Mystic Knights of the Cobra", you know- I know nothing about this band, the singer or whatever but she does make it next level.

Tracks of 2012: Bloc Party- And So He Begins To Lie by OUTROVERSION

Tracks of 2012: Bloc Party- And So He Begins To Lie

by outroversion
I know I've been out of the game for ages and I'm probably not ever going to come back but I guess this still serves a purpose of sharing a few tunes I'm liking even if I'm not going out to see bands and all that, I won't go into reasons as there's not really any in particular, just the way i'm choosing to play my cards.
As I become even more disinterested in all the bands nme and the press talk about and my e-mail inbox becomes a waste land for press releases i've found myself hanging onto new tunes by the artists that I was into half a decade ago and it has been with a huge sense of relief that great albums by Bloc Part (four), Green Day (Dos!) and Ben Gibbard (Former Lives) have somewhat restoked my fires even a little bit.
It is with a sense of trepidation that I say Alt-J's awesome wave is probably the best new album i've heard this year as it contradicts everything i've just said, also everyone else is saying that, rendering my opinion pointless. Anyway...

Bloc Party- And So He Begins To Lie
This performance on Jools Holland was the first I'd even heard about a new Bloc Party album. Silent Alarm was a magnificent and articulate debut but misdirection since then has made them hard to follow. After seeing this performance, I declared it "flawless". I've heard the album since then and so is that.

Proof Catfish is genuine by OUTROVERSION

Proof Catfish is genuine.

Image
Ok so 1. I know this isn't about music but I've been uninspired and this movie inspired me. 2. If you haven't seen this movie, do. You'll dig the hell out of it.
So this movie captured my imagination the way great movies do and gave me lots of stuff to research, which I also love doing because I have an inquisitive/obsessive personality (:
I can say 100% that Catfish is genuine. Or a needlessly elaborate hoax.
If these are to be debunked then it would be a hoax that would be elaborate to the extent it would be pointless for a movie that's barely made a profit...

Fredrick- Chrome Cavaties
I heard this on some advertisement or other. The atmospheric nature of it reminded me of Say Hi and without sounding dramatic- Xiu Xiu. Truth is, Fredrick are two guys and a girl from Sweden. Both the guys have beards. Don't let that bother you.

[New post] Rare Conor Oberst: Magentas // Norman Bailer // Mayday

Otra Rec de nuestro amigo OUTRO:

New post on The Outroversion Music Blog

Rare Conor Oberst: Magentas // Norman Bailer // Mayday

by outroversion
No matter how well you know Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst's former works the internet is usually able to show you something you didn't know existed from the years prior to his most famous body of work. Most people know Desparaciados, Park Av., Commander Venus but then you get into the rarest of territories- The Faint's former incarnation Norman Bailer with Conor on vocals and plundering further into the depths you find 1996's The Magentas. Three songs recorded, two perhaps stuff of legend but one you can get right here.
As ever there's scribbles for the other tracks (Science Fiction in Schools and Clatter) and people (hipsters) making out they've got it on tape so can't rip them or whatever. Anyway maybe they exist, maybe they don't but it won't stop me spending the rest of my day trying to find them (;
Bonus: Mayday- Confessions ft. Conor Oberst

Fun.: Some Nights Intro

New Music: Fun- Some Nights Intro

Fun.- Some Nights Intro
Another band that I can say a) I saw years ago and b) radio is ruining. The british media seem to be obsessed with a girl that sings on We Are Young (a track I featured last November) and tbh she is more of an annoyance than an addition but on the back of that it’s meant that fun. have been all over radio one and the british charts for months now. I appreciate that the backing of Hayley Williams, Glee, Apple, Gossip Girl and Judd Apatow did a lot for them over in the states but the sheepidity of british music and media is doing it’s bit over here too.
Asides from Electra Heart this is another grand slam of a sophomore album and when you’re intro is as good as this is how can it not be. All the musical grandiose that you come to expect from any Nate Ruess act but the fact that fun. is becoming more of a supergroup with all of the members and most casual members having amazing side projects makes this album a celebration of what they’re all capable of.
Truth is it’s a very hot day, I had a drink in toast to the sun and aren’t following my sentences that well so you’d better go away and go have some fun.(.)

New Music: Regina Spektor- All the Rowboats

Regina Spektor- All the Rowboats
Unfortunately this song has been a little overplayed on the radio. Unintentional Regina Spektor related puns aside, it’s been around about seven years so if you’re a fan of her music man can you ever hipster mermaid it up right now but bottom line is it’s a great track and hugely original. This in addition to it being, as she is often criticised for- very “artsy”. Booming drum machines, great delivery i’m just making sure you’ve heard it really, if you have then good for you you obviously don’t live in under a rock, if not you really should get with the game…

Marina & The Diamonds- Teen Idle

New Music: Marina & The Diamonds- Teen Idle

Marina and the Diamonds- Teen Idle
I hardly expected Marina and the Diamonds’ second album to be anything other than a suring up of her place in british popular music. Truth is it’s great, a brilliant album and has some unique tracks on it; Teen Idle being my particular highlight.
I first had the opportunity to see her in 2009, her first album was a while away at that point and her performances were built on the foundations of a goldmine of demos she had at her arsenal. At the time these were freely available, most people knew the songs but then she got signed her label took them down and they’re nothing more than legend most assuming they never existed.
Her eventual debut peaked at number 5 with the follow up the iconographic Electra Heart debuting at number one. In a time where the charts really couldn’t matter any less if they were done in alphabetical order it’s nice to see it still matters to some artists and with this being one of her ambitions you have to give her credit for realising it.
I needn’t really have written all this but there’s some artists’ integrity I feel the need to defend from time to time. Or maybe it’s just justifying my listening, whatever- check it-

New Music: Dog is Dead- Talk Through The Night

Sorry about that, kinda moved to Cornwall there.

Dog is Dead- Talk Through the Night
I’d seen Dog is Dead a couple of times but regardless of the Glockenspiel Song, this is the one that stuck with me. I’d been waiting for a studio recording and went as far to rip audio from live recordings of this track I was that taken by it. The wait isn’t quite over but with their free to subscribers Talent Show EP comes the next best thing, an acoustic version.
