Tracks of the year: Horrible Crowes- I witnessed a crime

The Horrible Crowes- I witnessed a crime
Reggue infused with magnificent lyricism. I've listened to this track a stupid amount of times this year and am nowhere near tired of it. The strength of this song is in Brian Fallon's lyricsm; each verse is perfect and the only chorus is in the rhythm which catches back every couple of stanzas.
The tempo gets mixed up in the middle eight "She said, 'I just went crazy from the heat'..." and entwines with the main body as it winds down. It's just plainly a magnificent song, one that won't be ruined by the mainstream or radio plays as it won't get on there, it's too good for it.

Albums of the year: Horrible Crowes- Elsie

Albums of the year: Horrible Crowes- Elsie

by outroversion
The review says all to be said about Brian Fallon and this record. It's quite the masterpiece and remarkebly underrated.
It might have been easy to disregard The Horrible Crowes; Brian Fallon's partnership with his guitar tech, Ian Perkins as a dumping ground for material penned by the Gaslight Anthem frontman that doesn't quite fit their mercurially crafted sound. Easy that is, if this album wasn't as good as it is.
True though that there would have been a few raised eyebrows if some of these songs were reserved for the New Jersey man's day job as they explore areas musically and lyrically that might perhaps not have translated into their catalogue. Some numbers like Sugar and Blood Loss are slower tempo than anything we've heard from Fallon in the past but still unmistakeably and reassuringly him.
As I mentioned there are some songs that you wouldn't have expected, whether its the reggae fuelled (but absolutely brilliant) I Witnessed a Crime or bluesy shoegazing Cherry Blossoms.
While these songs are great there's a few breaks where most bands might put filler but at these moments where things might threaten to get even slower or instrumental they've smashed it with some huge Anthemesque tracks in the dark Mary Ann, the familiar Behold the Hurricane and contrastingly paced Go On Tell Everybody making this record as vital as any released this year.
There are things you can rely on with Brian Fallon, firstly that he can write relevant and poignant lyrics with a fundamental urgency the other that he can make any song sound good. Thing is when the songs are as good as he writes they're uncomparable. Over the next decade his work is in danger of becoming peerless.
As close to flawless as you get these days.

Albums of the year

Albums of the year:

by outroversion
I'm starting off my albums of the year round up with what I suppose is a fairly mainstream album, being the solo debut of a member of Britain's biggest band of the past 20 years, Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds. It's an album that has managed to oncce again prove himself as one of the best song writers of our generation and also seems to have weeded out the yobby element that Oasis seemed to attract. I welcome this, it's a wonderful album.

If Liam Gallagher had called his band something as pretentious as Noel's debut album, Beady Eye would have been even more unsuccessful. Fact is, Noel Gallagher should be allowed to do whatever he wants as he's proved himself to be a magnificent songwriter over the years where Liam just thinks he can do whatever he wants because he's an idiot.
A number one album now seperates the brothers.
The fact that Noel has been a songwriter for over 20 years certainly works in his favour here, not just in terms of quality but people's perceptions of his work- there was nothing to get used to. He released a few songs prior to the album, all of which were great but of course no one was surprised and were just happy to hear his songs again.
With Liam it was a bit more of "I can see why he didn't write any songs over the past 20 years" and "You really notice how annoying his voice is when you have to hear it in all the songs".
Liam's already talking about an Oasis reunion, I doubt it's on Noel's to do list any time soon.
I'll stop with the comparisons between the two as there really isn't any.
Onto the album. As expected it does sound like it was made to be performed at the Albert Hall and that he's showcasing the works at the largest indoor venues the country has to offer suggests his own confidence in the music and his experience as a musician, and of course rightly so.
The question of whether his current and back catalogues will transfer to a one man acoustic set (which they are unlikely to be judging by the strings and brass on the album), has been answered many times at charity events in the past. The difference with those shows and with Oasis, he's going to be doing this for himself.
If I had a gun

New Artist: Harbour

New Artist: Harbour

by outroversion
Bourne out of the ashes of The Echoes, Harbour are very much the same band but with completely different songs and a tangeably different sound. Does that make them an entirely different band though?
Back in the summer when the four piece opened 2000 Trees they were noted for their less gravel ravaged Gaslight Anthem-esque vibrations and Rocket Summer style presentation, hearing them now that seems like a bizarre memory we can't help but convince ourselves isn't true.
From the two tracks available online "To The Water" and "Guide Me In" we are presented with a more familiar sound, akin to Cheltenham golden boys and guitarist Chris Capewell's other outfit Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun. Lyrically the new songs are more prophetic and profound, rooted in the foundations of great songwriters creating 4 minute moments; footsteps that while difficult to follow in are irresistable. As we find here.
When I first heard Harbour wouldn't be playing or recording any Echoes songs I thought they could probably be persuaded with a little enticement from a packed house but they've found a new dynamic that they're completely at home with and it may no longer be appropriate. Rather than "changing" their sound, Harbour is the sound of development, a maturing band whose journey is going to be fascinating to follow.
Their live shows are still being described using superlatives like amazing, insane and perfect so nothing changes there. The only real differences from here on in will be in the size of the venues and audiences that will have the privilage of witnessing the ensuing steps of their odyssey. They weren't gone for long but we're so glad they're back.
"Run fast, run hard and run straight back to the water."
They're great to their fans too, head over to their Facebook or Twitter for updates and chats with the band, their Youtube for behind the scenes videos and hit the up for a limited edition 'zine. As I said, they're limited edition so you might have to ask nicely (;
If you missed the first track you can hear an early version of it here on soundcloud-
